This year's theme for IN FOCUS, a half-day event hosted by the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum (GTNF) to discuss important issues affecting the industry, was tobacco harm reduction and the best ways to assist smokers in switching to lower-risk products like vapes, heat-not-burn products, and oral nicotine.
The Vice Chair of the UK Parliament's All-Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping, Andrew Lewer MBE MP, and Delon Human, the President of Health Diplomats and a former Secretary-General of the World Medical Association, spoke at a breakfast event in central London prior to the virtual conference.
The UK government has made it clear that the main goals of its harm reduction policy are to encourage current smokers to switch to a less hazardous option and to use vaping as an aid for quitting smoking. After reviewing all available independent and peer-reviewed evidence, Public Health England (formerly the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities) has been adamant since 2015 that vaping is at least 95% less dangerous than smoking. This was corroborated by an additional analysis of the data in 2018, by Dr. Javed Khan in his independent report on "making smoking obsolete" last year, and by the Minister of Public Health, Neil O'Brien MP, in a recent address earlier this month.
Concerns have been expressed, meanwhile, over the rise in the accessibility of nicotine products for minors as well as the expansion of the market for illicit and non-compliant vapes.
